Eftersom Tuve just har stängt en kommentarstråd i sin blogg där ett par citat om ofelbarhet diskuterades, så tar jag mig friheten att citera dem här så vi kan fortsätta att bena i just den tråden.

Det gäller alltså när ett katolskt uttalande ses som ofelbart - och inte. Intressant nog så är det mesta som påvarna lär ut icke-ofelbart (se citaten).
En fråga som inte hör till tro utan praxis har förts fram med anspråk på ofelbarhet. Kvinnoprästfrågan dogmatiserades dock inte "ex cathedra" - även om formuleringen är förvillande lik detta förfarande.
Här kommer först några matnyttiga definitioner:
1) "Extraordinary Magisterium refers to a special exercise of their teaching office by either the Pope and bishops together, or the Pope alone, in which a definitive judgment is given. When a General Council pronounces a solemn definition, this is an exercise of the extraordinary Magisterium. So is an ex cathedra definition by the Pope: a decision definitively settling the question.
2) By contrast ordinary Magisterium refers to the exercise of the teaching office without a solemn definition being given. This is the case with the day-today teaching of bishops in their dioceses, or the greater part-almost the entire part-of the Popes teaching. (Much in these categories, however, has already been defined infallibly.)
3) The term ordinary universal Magisterium means an exercise of the Church's teaching office where there is complete agreement, or fairly close to complete agreement, among the Catholic Bishops of the world that a particular doctrine is certainly true, but without a solemn definition.
The extraordinary Magisterium is infallible. A definition given by a General Council or an ex cathedra definition by a Pope cannot be erroneous. Likewise, the ordinary universal Magisterium is infallible. The fact that the bishops are dispersed throughout the world' (in the words of Vatican II quoted above) does not make any difference.
What of the ordinary (but not universal) Magisterium? Is it infallible? No, as Vatican II indicates in the quotation above concerning statements that are not ex cathedra."
För att använda just kvinnoprästfrågan som exempel:
Påven ensam hade aldrig kunnat komma med ett uttalande mot prästvigning av kvinnor eftersom det inte skulle ha uppfyllt samtliga nödvändiga kriterier för ett ofelbarhetsuttalande ex cathedra (närmare bestämt punkterna 4 och 5 i citaten nedan). Och något ekumeniskt koncilium har inte hållits i frågan. Både alternativ 1 och 2 faller därmed.
Alltså måste det finnas en enighet bland biskoparna världen över - alternativ 3 - för att detta ska ses som ofelbart. Men biskoparna är inte ens tillfrågade - och bevisligen är de oeniga (några har ju vigt kvinnor olagligt, andra håller tyst med att de också är för prästvigning av kvinnor). Förre påven försökte mot slutet av sitt liv få kontroll över framtida biskopar genom att införa en regel om att dessa innan vigningen måste intyga att de är emot kvinnliga präster!
Ett "ofelbart" uttalande enligt punkt 3 är alltså även det en chimär - frågan hanteras genom skrämd tystnad och tvång - och i yttersta nödfall exkommunicering ifall det kommer till påvens kännedom att en biskop inte håller med om detta. Inte precis respektfullt gentemot biskopskollegornas samveten, teologiska visdom och lyhördhet inför Gud... För att inte tala om lekfolkets känsla för vad som är rätt - sensus fidelii - där omkring 70% av katolikerna enligt en undersökning anser att också kvinnor bör kunna bli präster. En dogm kan inte instiftas på tvärs med det de troende menar vara sant.... Kyrkan som de troendes världsvida gemenskap utgör ytterligare en variant av ofelbarhet. Nedan kommer citaten med kriterierna på ofelbara uttalanden.

"The criteria for Papal Infallibility were defined infallibly by the First Vatican Council in Pastor Aeternus, chapter four, as quoted below (with my numbering added). There are five criteria which must be met for a Papal teaching to be infallible:
1. “the Roman Pontiff”
2. “speaks ex cathedra” (“that is, when in the discharge of his office as shepherd and teacher of all Christians, and by virtue of his supreme apostolic authority….”)
3. “he defines”
4. “that a doctrine concerning faith or morals”
5. “must be held by the whole Church”
These criteria were reaffirmed by the Second Vatican Council, in Lumen Gentium, n. 25, paragraph 3, using somewhat different language to teach the same truths (again, with my numbering):
1. “the Roman Pontiff”
2. “in virtue of his office, when as the supreme shepherd and teacher of all the faithful, who confirms his brethren in their faith (cf. Lk 22:32),”
3. “by a definitive act, he proclaims”
4. “a doctrine of faith or morals” (“And this infallibility…in defining doctrine of faith and morals, extends as far as the deposit of revelation extends”)
5. “in accordance with revelation itself, which all are obliged to abide by and be in conformity with”
It is the infallible teaching of the Catholic Church that each and every one these criteria must be met for a teaching to be infallible, if it is taught by the Pope alone. (The Pope can also teach infallibly in union with the other Bishops, as discussed below.) Therefore, whenever the Pope teaches by his own authority, yet without meeting all the criteria for an infallible Papal teaching, his teaching is non-infallible and it falls under the non-infallible Ordinary Magisterium, not the infallible Sacred Magisterium. Historically, the Popes have only occasionally taught under Papal Infallibility; they have most often taught under the non-infallible Ordinary Magisterium."
"Those who claim that the Magisterium never errs on matters of faith or morals are contradicting the teaching of the Magisterium itself, which limits infallibility to very specific criteria under Papal Infallibility, the solemn definitions of Ecumenical Councils, and the Ordinary Universal Magisterium. All other teachings of the Magisterium proper fall under its ordinary non-infallible teaching authority. The most common way that the successors of Peter and the successors of other Apostles teach is under the Ordinary Magisterium."
