The Roman Catholic Church needs to change dramatically, says a Latin American liberation theologian, if is to do justice to its task in a continent that accounts for almost half of the world's 1.1 billion Catholics. "In the Catholic Church today, fear dominates," said Chilean theologian Pablo Richard, who is now director of the Department of Ecumenical Research at San Jose in Costa Rica. "The Church has closed in on itself and is cut off from the world.
